| Medical Support Systems Limited (MSS)
of Wales are innovative market leaders in the design
and manufacture of high quality pressure reducing support
products. These include mattresses for the medical care
services in the UK. Their brands include Softform, Propad
and Flo-tech. Chairman Alex Laidlaw identified a market
opportunity for a quality electrically profiling bed
for the NHS. |
| The Pro-Flex design created by GX
complies with Kings Fund recommendations, and the electric
actuators prevent staff injury as a result of lifting
heavy patients. The bed caters for patients up to 35
stone in weight, thus avoiding the logistical problem
and cost of hiring heavy weight beds for individual
patients. |
| GX undertook reasearch at a number
of hospitals and discovered that headboards, footboards
and siderails often become lost as these are not always
attached to beds. GX created special mechanisms for
the side rails and head and foot boards which integrated
them into the structure of the bed but allowed for instantaneous
access to the patient when required. |
| The bed uses six different profiling
positions which may be selected by staff or, when desirable,
by the patient. The wheels have a central braking system,
and a range of accessories including the Balkan Beam
frame, integrated bed stripper and monkey pole. IV pole
mountings were integrated into the design. Innovative
materials were selected to maximise ease and efficiency
of cleaning and increase of product life. |
| Compression of the patient’s
abdomen and pressure to their sacrum are both minimised
in this bed by simultaneously moving the backrest vertically
and horizontally. |
