BAYER DIAGNOSTICS CLINITEK STATUS

GX were commissioned by Bayer to design an ultra low cost urine analysis instrument in order to protect market share. The product eliminates inaccuracies in visual reading and address the problem of maintaining accurate patient records.

GX utilised CCD technology to read the strips and three patents have been awarded to GX for this invention (patent ownership resides with Bayer). GX optical designers created high efficiency light guides and complex lenses that fitted into a low cost but rigid injection moulded chassis.

Around the mid stage of the project GX were asked to further develop Clinitek Status to read immuno diagnostic cartridges (drugs of abuse test, pregnancy testing, etc,).

With the validity of the CCD technology proven and the low manufacturing cost target met, Bayer sales and marketing became involved in the project with the prime objective of taking this new technology to market.

The project ran for approximately seven years and GX were the only part of the development team that remained dedicated to the project throughout its development. This was a ‘company wide’ project for GX involving industrial, mechanical, electronic (Software and Hardware) and optronic design disciplines.

Clinitek Status was launched in 2003 and is now on sale in over 100 countries worldwide.
